As a rule of thumb, to assess whether you are developing research software, consider the following questions:

  1. Are you writing code to support or conduct research for a publication?
  2. Have you created scripts or programs to analyze or process research data?
  3. Are you developing software tools or libraries to facilitate your research tasks?
  4. Do you build applications or APIs that are integral to your research findings?
  5. Is your code essential for reproducing the results presented in your research?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you are developing research software.
