As a rule of thumb, to assess whether you are developing research software, consider the following questions:
- Are you writing code to support or conduct research for a publication?
- Have you created scripts or programs to analyze or process research data?
- Are you developing software tools or libraries to facilitate your research tasks?
- Do you build applications or APIs that are integral to your research findings?
- Is your code essential for reproducing the results presented in your research?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you are developing research software.
